Is staying in an overwater bungalow on your bucket list? It was definitely on ours, and we made it happen! Was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY! Would we do it again? DEFINITELY. Talk about a slice of paradise. How can you have any troubles while you are drinking your morning coffee literally on the water? We took this trip during an extremely stressful time in our lives, and the trip gave us the mental break and clarity to make our next life and professional decisions. We were able to come to peace with tough decisions we needed to make, and then thoroughly enjoyed jumping or flopping off our bungalow porch into the crystal-clear Indian Ocean.
No planning, no alarms, no tours, no schedules. It was exactly what we needed on our 4-day mental health trip. We woke up, ate, napped, and swam whenever we wanted. We, of course, had another destination tied into our trip afterwards, but this was a great way to get acclimated to a new time zone, fully relax, and destress before our next adventure. We chose to tie in the Maldives with a trip to Dubai, since we’d made it all the way to the other side of the world!
There is something highly therapeutic about falling asleep and waking up to the rhythmic sound of the ocean right beneath your feet. Being near water and hearing the ocean is very healing and relaxing. We spent hours just sitting on the balcony of our room, watching the colorful reef fish swim by. It felt like a form of forced meditation, which we were in great need of! That uninterrupted connection with nature acted like a hard reset button for our nervous systems, washing away months of built-up anxiety and allowing us to feel at peace for the first time in a long time.
Science backs up that ocean magic! Studies show that spending time near coastal environments activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the body's "rest and digest" mode), leading to an immediate 15% to 20% reduction in anxiety severity.(1)
While most of our trips are “go, go, go” and packed with as many sites as possible, taking 4 days out to do absolutely nothing but soak in the sun and sea was a great rejuvenation for us. Could we live here in paradise permanently? Probably not, as we’d go a little crazy with nothing to do. But we spent our days focusing on our mental health by swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. We loved the fact that we had a shower and a standalone bathtub outside our room, as well as a shower inside the room too. We never thought watching the sunset with an ocean breeze from an outside bathtub would be a thing, but we thoroughly enjoyed it! The only thing missing from our room was an infinity pool, and you know, maybe a slide! But when the ocean is right there, who needs an infinity pool?
One thing the Maldives is not missing is transportation. We found and booked a ferry company that picked us up from Velana International Airport and brought us straight to the resort via speedboat. It was a smooth trip for us, even the speedboat experience was relaxing!
If this trip taught us anything, it’s that prioritizing your mental well-being isn't selfish—it’s necessary. We often wear our busy schedules like a badge of honor, but taking a step back to breathe and just be is where the real magic happens. Leaving our overwater sanctuary, we didn't just feel pampered; we felt completely restored from the inside out. Our minds were sharper, our hearts were lighter, and we felt fully equipped to tackle whatever challenges were waiting for us back home. Investing in a dedicated relaxation trip might seem like a luxury, but the mental clarity and emotional rejuvenation you bring back with you? That is absolutely priceless. During our stay, we noticed that almost every night, we had new neighbors. However, we went to the expense of indulging in the much-needed 4-night escape and felt fortunate enough to be able to make it happen.
